CSA - Community Supported Agriculture - CSA is a great way to support your local farmer, and get fresh veggies in return.
How it works: Buy a membership for $400. In return, you get at least $20 of fresh veggies each week for 20 weeks during the growing season.

Contracts available in 2012:
-Vegetable contract: $400 for the year gives each member approx $20 of veggies for 20 weeks from June-Oct. (suitable for two people)
-Family share: $800 for the year gives each member approx $40 of veggies for 20 weeks from June-Oct (suitable for a family of 4)
-Egg contract: $80 a contract gives each member a dozen assorted size farm fresh eggs for 20 weeks. Eggs are a mixture of heritage and 'regular' ISA chicken eggs. ( egg contracts run Jan 22- May 27 and June 3 - Oct 14)

Home delivery will be available in 2012 for CSA veggie contracts for a one time seasonal charge of $80 ($4 each week). Home delivery will be available in Crofton, Chemainus, Duncan, Maple Bay and Ladysmith only.

NEW! CSA can now be ordered online with your credit card via localharvest. The link to my page is  http://www.localharvest.org/crazy-dog-farm-M42889

About CSA:
Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer. In brief...

Advantages for farmers:
  • Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the field begin
  • Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow
  • Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow
Advantages for consumers:
  • Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
  • Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
  • Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season
  • Find that kids typically favor food from "their" farm – even veggies they've never been known to eat
  • Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn more about how food is grown
Expected crops will be listed below, with the understanding that farming is a seasonal and unpredictable undertaking, and that exact selections and quantities included in the weekly distrubution will change as the season progresses. In joining the CSA, you agree to share in the fluctuations and variations inherent in farming, and understand that my produce will be grown with sound sustainable farming practices.
